In 1952 the Indian Board for Wildlife set up a committee to design a zoo. In 1953 the committee approved the zoo, and in October 1955 the Indian Forest Service was assigned to oversee the zoo's formation. The National Zoological Park was opened on November 1, 1959, a zoo.
